About the Creator

Kevin Saunders’ connection to Prathertown is deeply personal. As a member of the Prather family, he approaches this documentary not merely as a filmmaker, but as a descendant honoring the sacrifices and resilience of his ancestors. Founded by formerly enslaved members of his family after the Civil War, Prathertown embodies unity, faith, and the audacity to claim space and build community in a time when freedom did not guarantee equality.

Montgomery County, now one of the wealthiest counties in America, has not always shared its prosperity equally. Prathertown reflects systemic inequities – redlining, discriminatory lending, segregation, and underinvestment – yet the Prather family preserved their land, heritage, and community across generations. Their story demonstrates that true wealth is measured not by income or expansion, but by perseverance, legacy, and faith.

As a filmmaker, Saunders approaches this project with both reverence and purpose. He seeks to illuminate the enduring strength and humanity of Prathertown, ensuring that this historic Black community and the remarkable story of his family are seen, understood, and never forgotten.
